Phil studied medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) under the Global Physician-leadership Stream. Basic and translational genomics and epigenetics have been his long term interest. After graduation, he pursued doctoral studies (DPhil) at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, University of Oxford, during which he studied cancer DNA methylation and its utility as a circulatory cell-free DNA biomarker. Phil’s major contribution was proposing a novel statistical framework to account for the variable cell type content in patient samples, which allowed him to define molecular signatures of interest using bulk sequencing samples, and subsequently detecting the signals in cell-free DNA. He has now returned to CUHK under the Neurology division as a Clinical Lecturer to continue his clinical training and passion in translational research. His expertise includes various DNA and RNA sequencing assays, as well as exploratory and statistical analysis of multi-omics and multi-modal data types.
