History

Professor Gerald Choa

The Gerald Choa Neuroscience Institute (GCNI) honours the memory and contributions of the first dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Gerald CHOA. Prof. CHOA showed strong interests in neurology and believed in the power of basic research to improve the human condition.

Establishment of GCNC

The Gerald Choa Neuroscience Centre (GCNC) was established in 2016 to foster the development of neuroscience research. Under the co-directorship of Prof. Wing Ho YUNG, and Prof. Vincent Chung Tong MOK, GCNC started its neuroscience research focusing on brain mechanisms of behaviours, the genetic basis of brain disorders and neurovascular biology and diseases.

Establishment of GCNC

MRI Core Facilities

GCNC extended its support to CUHK neuroscience research through the establishment of MRI Core Facility in 2020. The Team offers a wide range of advanced MRI facilities for neuroscience studies and aims to discover the brain functions and unlock the complicated pathological brain changes associated with common brain diseases. Now: From GCNC to GCNI

With CUHK’s aspiration in expanding the neuroscience research and community, the centre elevated to a university-level research institute in 2022, namely Gerald Choa Neuroscience Institute (GCNI). By naming in the honour of Prof. CHOA, and under the directorship of Prof. Bruce R. RANSOM, GCNI will level up the neuroscience research of CUHK by grooming future neuroscientists and developing a research environment that promotes discovery neuroscience of the highest standard.
